Matthew Backer, 10AUSTINTOWN – There will be services at 6 p.m. Monday at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church for Matthew Backer, 10, who passed away Thursday morning at Forum Northside Medical Center after a six-month battle with leukemia.Matthew was born Feb. 14, 1996, in Sacramento, Calif., the son of Rick and Kelly Welsh Backer.
A member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, he would have began this school year as a fifth grader at Austintown Middle School.Matthew enjoyed baseball and had played for the Austintown Little League. He also played flag football for the Mill Creek Flag Football League and was an avid Steelers fan. On Aug. 21, he was invited by the Steelers to visit their training camp and later enjoyed dinner with the team, especially his favorite, player Troy Polamalu, who gave him an autographed jersey to wear.
Matthew was an inspiration to many and will be sadly missed by his family and friends.He is survived by his grandparents, Bob and Sue Welsh, with whom he made his home; his parents, Rick and Kelly Backer; a sister, Nicole Backer; a brother, Richard Backer of Austintown; his aunt, Kim Welsh, with whom he also made his home; his grandparents, Bernard and Lela Backer of California; and his great-grandmother, Viola Welsh.He was preceded in death by great-grandparents parents, Matthew and Agnes Oleyar, and Bob Welsh Sr.
Friends may call from 4 to 5:45 p.m. Monday at the church.The family has requested that all memorial contributions be made to the Matthew Backer Leukemia Fund at any Farmers National Bank Branch.
